The photo below shows the latest progress in the building of the Essau Lower Basic School Unit, a project that Intouch Global Foundation have funded with the support of The Gambian Deaf Children Support Project (GDCSP). The Unit will host children from the local area and is the second to be funded by ITG after the establishment of a special class at St Joseph’s primary school in Basse in 2012.
Both units have been built to facilitate the education of deaf and partially hearing students who, due to a lack of facilities and adequately trained staff in most mainstream government schools, are at a disadvantage when it comes to their education. Those who complete their Lower and Upper Basic Cycle education will have the chance to further their studies at St John’s School for The Deaf, ensuring that they have had the same opportunity to learn and benefit from attending school.
