In the year 2000 the Headteacher of Hagley Primary School, West Midlands and a group of teachers visited The Lower Basic School in Janjangbureh, The Gambia in West Africa to make an impact and change the direction of where the nursery was headed. The poverty observed that day was distressing and unacceptable. Therefore, the Hagley teachers resolved that they would raise funds to build an independent nursery for the preschool children of Janjangbureh, with ages ranging from 4 to 7 years. A suitable plot of land was purchased away from the main road and the nursery was built with two classrooms, an office, a kitchen and three toilets to accommodate sixty children. The nursery has been hugely successful, and twenty years later there are five classrooms, a large reading / story telling room and a kitchen where meals are cooked daily for the 160 plus children who currently attend.
